Move-Out Cleaning: What Landlords Actually Check

May 2, 2026 Anna's Shine LLC

Move-out inspections are more predictable than most tenants expect. Landlords and property managers work from a list, and it's largely the same list every time. Knowing what's on it is most of the battle.

Inside the appliances. The oven, the fridge, the dishwasher filter, and the microwave are the first places anyone looks — and the first thing tenants skip. Baked-on grease inside an oven is one of the most commonly deducted items on a move-out report.

Cabinets, drawers, and closets. Empty is not the same as clean. Crumbs in drawer corners, sticky shelf liners, and dust on closet rods all get noted. Every interior surface should be wiped, not just emptied.

Baseboards, door frames, and switch plates. These collect a year of scuffs and dust that nobody notices until an inspector runs a hand along them. They photograph badly, which makes them easy to deduct for.

Bathrooms and grout. Soap scum, hard-water spots on glass, and discolored grout read as neglect even in an otherwise tidy unit. These need pre-treatment and dwell time, not a quick wipe.

Floors, corners, and window tracks. Vacuum lines are not the standard — corners, edges, under-appliance gaps, and window tracks are where a real move-out clean separates itself.
